If you can't even spend a hundred bucks don't expect to keep that data intact for long. I've seen more problems with shitty storage controllers and other garbage that people even in home labs shouldn't be using than I can count.

I *may* just use USB3.0 drives lol, not great on performance but it would do the trick....... Sometimes I feel like I should buy a better PC for that.

Nah, I just want a large storage so I can put some of my less-needed, less slow VMs on there. Its a developmer environment, off of a Dell 3600 so they didn't give to many slots to upgrade. I have 4 SSDs in there now...

it is what it is... Sure there are others that would work if you aren't worried about vSAN compatibility. Having worked for the vSAN team for the past 5 years, those are the kinds of controllers I kept up with.
